Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about joining the Buffalo Sabres Thunder family.
General Information
What is WNY Special Hockey?
Yes! We are always happy to welcome new families to Lockport Pediatrics. Whether you are a first-time parent, new to the area, or transferring from another practice, we look forward to meeting you. Please visit our New Patients page to register.
Where and when do you practice?
Our practices are held every Sunday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the North Buffalo Rink, located at 156 Tacoma Ave., Buffalo, NY 14216.
Players & Eligibility
Who is eligible to join the team?
We welcome male and female athletes, typically ages 7 to 50, with developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy.
Does my child need previous hockey or skating experience?
While some skating ability is helpful, it is not a strict requirement to start. We have coaches and mentors to help develop basic skills. However, players must be able to skate independently (even at a basic level) to fully participate.
How are players grouped?
Players are divided into three levels (A, B, and C) based on their skating and hockey skills. This ensures everyone practices with others of a similar ability while still being part of the whole team.
Registration & Costs
How much does it cost to join?
We strive to keep costs as low as possible. Currently, there are no team fees. Players are only responsible for their annual USA Hockey registration fee (which varies by birth year). ASHA registration is free.
Is annual registration mandatory?
Yes. All players, coaches, and mentors must register with USA Hockey and ASHA every year before the season begins for insurance and safety purposes.
Equipment & Safety
What equipment is required?
All players must wear full hockey gear, including a helmet with a cage, skates, gloves, and pads.
What if I don't have equipment?
Don’t worry! We have a supply of gently used equipment that we are happy to share with new players who need it.
